Sow carrot seeds ¼ inch deep. When they have 2 or 3 leaves, thin them to stand 1 to 3 inches apart. Thinning is very important for good shape.
Light, friable, and free from rocks and clods. pH 6.0 to 7.5.
At planting time, use 2 pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer per 100 square feet, or ¾ pound per 25-foot row. Side-dress every 3 to 4 weeks with ¾ pound per 25-foot row.
How much: Apply enough water at each irrigation to wet the soil 12 to 15 inches deep.
How often: Water when the soil 1 inch deep is barely moist. Do not let the soil dry out.
Pull carrots anytime from finger-size until they reach the size stated on the seed packet. When pulling carrots, select the largest first, so that those remaining have room to enlarge. Carrots can be left in the ground and harvested over the winter.
